Training and development

Here at NFU Mutual, we understand that getting great performance relies on great preparation. That’s why we provide comprehensive - and continuous - training to our Agents. Courses take place at our dedicated Training Academy at our Head Office in Stratford-upon-Avon or local to you through our network of Agency Training Specialists, Sales Development Consultants and Quality Development Consultants.

We aim to help new Agents become fully licenced within six months. Learning is tailored to suit you - and your agency.

Professional qualifications

Gain CII certification with our support. The CII (Chartered Institute of Insurance) is the premier professional organisation for those working in the insurance and financial services industry. Though not compulsory, we encourage all our Agents to work towards CII certification.

Why CII? The Institute is dedicated to promoting higher standards of competence and integrity through the provision of relevant qualifications for employees at all levels across all sectors of the industry.

Want to go further? The ACII (Advanced Diploma in Insurance) is for individuals who aspire to senior positions within the industry. It provides a deep understanding of insurance practice, covering technical subject matter and management skills. If you're interested in gaining these qualifications, then NFU Mutual will support you all the way.

New starter event

Duration: Three days

You will be invited to attend this three-day event at Head Office once you start in your new role. Whether you're new to NFU Mutual or have been working with us already in another area of the business, it will provide insight into your new role, and introduce the support you can look forward to. It's also a great opportunity to talk about any concerns or issues - there'll be plenty of practical advice to help you find your feet.

This interactive and informal workshop will introduce you to Senior Managers in the business, as well as giving you the chance to hear from experienced and successful Agents share the way they manage and run their agencies for you to learn from.

With talks from each of NFU Mutual's main business streams – General Insurance, Financial Services and Risk Management Services, forming the cornerstone of your business, we will provide you with practical sales tools and advice to help you achieve your goals for yourself and your agency, as well as aligning to NFU Mutual's strategy.

Experts from a range of Head Office departments will provide an overview of the support they can offer you while you become settled in your role and on towards driving the growth of your agency. From Marketing and Learning & Development, to visiting our Investments Department to gain an insight from our Fund Managers into NFU Mutual's investment philosophy, you will have a packed agenda and come away filled with new ideas and plans for your agency, as well as meeting a group of other new Agents like yourself to keep in touch with along the way.

Farm familiarisation

Location: Warwickshire College

As some new Agents join us without any prior agricultural knowledge, we offer this course to help you understand our members and how their businesses work. This will see you spending two days ‘down on the farm’ in Warwickshire, learning about arable farming and livestock management. You’ll need your wellies and woollies - this is a practical course that offers the opportunity to handle livestock, see agricultural machinery up close, and learn about the unique Health and Safety requirements farmers must meet.

We aim to help new Agents become fully licenced within twelve months. Learning is tailored to suit you and your agency though your program will typically include - The Sales Excellence programme is all about developing your sales skills and capabilities, with courses that will deliver a consistent NFU Mutual way of selling that supports our vision and values.

The programme will enable new Agents to progress from a base level of sales competence, through to more advanced techniques over an 18 month to two-year period. And, for more experienced sellers, the more advanced courses will provide an excellent opportunity to grow or brush up on your existing skills.

Technical product training

Alongside the skills workshops, the product licensing courses will cover the following:

Motor: Car, commercial vehicle and agricultural vehicle
Personal: Home, lifestyle and bespoke
Commercial: Farm and packages

How we support you

Whilst you will run your agency as your own business, we'll be on hand to help you every step of the way, ensuring you get all the support you need.

At NFU Mutual's Head Office in Stratford-upon-Avon, there are a great number of specialists working to support Agents like you. As you’d expect, the departments cover everything from sales, marketing, underwriting and claims through to auditing, IT, strategy, investments, accounts and learning and organisational development.

The mentoring scheme we run helps our new Agents by putting them in contact with an experienced Agent from another office in the UK. Your mentor Agent will work with you over an 18-month period providing advice and guidance that will help you develop and succeed in your new role.

The field support team

Along with the support you'll receive from your partner Agent(s), you can rely on a network of NFU Mutual experts to support your agency as it grows. They'll be on hand to work with you to help develop your business and make it successful.

Regional Managers

Your Regional Manager is responsible for all NFU Mutual field staff and the strategy within the region. It’s their overall responsibility to ensure that you and your team achieve objectives and maximise the sales of Life and General Business and work within a regulatory framework - so they’re always at the end of the phone to provide help and advice when you need it.

Sales Managers

Sales Managers work closely with around 10 to 15 agencies, focusing on General Insurance sales performance, Life Lead generation and the development of our key propositions to deliver Sustainable Profitable Growth.

Agency Managers

Focusing on the future is a key skill for our centrally based Agency Managers. Splitting their time between Head Office and the Regions, they are responsible for managing and developing the Agency Network itself, as well as helping Agents to be the best they can be for themselves and their business.

Financial Planning Managers

Financial Planning Managers lead, manage and develop the regional life sales team of Financial Advisers. They act as links across the Agency Network, designing and delivering regional plans to achieve targets and support the national strategy for developing financial services and maintaining standards of customer care and compliance.

Sales Development Consultants

Sales Development Consultants drive agency sales activity, supporting the development and ongoing review of the annual sales plan, whilst ensuring compliant, profitable growth across a defined area. Sales Consultants promote and encourage sales activity and manage sales performance against agreed targets. Sales Consultants typically work with 4-8 agencies.

Quality Development Consultants

Quality Development Consultants form a vital link between our Head Office and our agencies. Working in a growing area of the organisation, they shape and develop the quality and consistency of sales within the business. Quality Development Consultants advise on everything from training and development to compliance and quality. They understand the nuances of the agencies they work with, train and develop sales staff, and carry out audits to identify and proactively resolve any quality issues.

Learning and Development Specialists

Learning and Development Specialists are responsible for delivering technical product, sales and skills courses to the Agency Network.

Financial Adviser

Financial Advisers are there to help you develop the Financial Services business opportunities in your area - a critical part of NFU Mutual's sales strategy. Financial Advisers advise on and sell NFU Mutual's range of investment, savings and protection products and work closely with agencies to maximise the opportunities from both existing and new members

Regional Service Centres

It is important to build a close relationship with your Claims and Underwriting colleagues within your Regional Service Centre as you will be in contact on a regular basis. Underwriters produce quotes for your agency’s business including any discounts that are available, and your Claims Handlers will deal with larger claims that your in-house Claims Administrator escalates.
